SportWest Statement | Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement 

SportWest acknowledges the release of the Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) earlier this week, which brings together the most recent evidence-based information. The AIS has collaborated extensively with Sports Medicine Australia, the Australian Physiotherapy Association, and the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians to inform this latest update.

Decades of Dedication: Service to Sport Award

SportWest proudly announces the recognition of three remarkable individuals for their unwavering commitment and decades of service, with the trio set to receive the May Campbell Medal for their Service to Sport at the 2023 WA Sport Awards set to be presented at HBF Stadium on Thursday 29 February.


Jan Cooper (Australian Rules Football), Tony Ball (Swimming) and David Neesham (Water Polo) will be honoured at Western Australia’s most prestigious sports awards, having given combined service of more than 150 years to their respective sports in the WA community.

Australia Day Honours

SportWest would like acknowledge the following individuals on receiving Australia Day Honours;

  • Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division Ms Christina Matthews - For significant service to cricket as a player and administrator, and to women. 

  • Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division Mrs Lynne Schickert, - For significant service to sport, and to the community.

  • Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division Ms Zoe Jean Goss - For service to cricket.

  • Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division Ms Valrie Morris Mayger - For service to equestrian sports.

  • Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division Ms Dawn Newman - For service to the community to cricket.

Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program | Grants Open

The Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) has opened its latest round of grant applications for its Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program. 


The program provides vital financial support to sport and active recreation organisations, enabling them to plan, secure and execute a diverse range of sports and mass participation events across WA.


Funding provided through the program provides an opportunity to increase tourism from both interstate and overseas visitors and showcase WA’s unique offerings in arts, culture, sports, and Aboriginal attractions to a global audience.

Disability Inclusion Workshops with WADSA

The WA Disabled Sports Association provides a range of customised inclusion workshops and specialised support services for your club, organisation or school. WADSA can provide ongoing support, increasing awareness of people with disability, and provide you with the skillset and confidence to provide inclusive and welcoming sport and recreation opportunities for people of all abilities in your communities.

Australian Sports Commission |Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement

The Australian Sports Commission this week, released their Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement.


There is growing concern in Australia and internationally about the incidence of sport-related concussion and potential health ramifications for athletes. If managed appropriately, most symptoms and signs of concussion resolve spontaneously. However, complications can occur, including prolonged symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury.


The Position Statement is intended to ensure that participant safety and welfare is paramount when dealing with concussion in sport.

Lotterywest grant puts WACA playground on a good wicket

Premier Roger Cook today presented a $5.2 million grant to support the historic transformation of the WACA - Western Australian Cricket Association.


The Lotterywest funding will go towards an all-abilities playground, fit out of calming and sensory rooms, specialised accessible gym equipment, interpretation works for the museum and all-ability changing facilities, supporting people living with disability.

Mental Health Champions Network Launch 

True Sport is proud to launch the Mental Health & Wellbeing Champions Network. A Mental Health Champion is the driver within their State Sporting Organisation creating and promoting supportive mental health environments. This role provides support and direction on mental health and wellbeing matters as well as being an advocate for mental health and wellbeing awareness and helping to drive cultural change in their workplace. The Mental Health Champion Network provides the platform for Champions from across the industry to come together and share experiences and knowledge relating to mental health in sport.


To be a Champion, you must complete the eLearning & attend a workshop.


Eligible Champions will be invited to join the network via email, including opportunity to attend four Mental Health Champion Networking events, where further chance for upskilling and cross-sport collaboration and connection (hosted by SportWest) will be available.

Child Safeguarding Workshop

You are invited to attend the True Sport Child Safeguarding Workshop where you will have the opportunity to better understand the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (National Principles) and consider the work your SSA is already doing to implement each National Principle and identify your next focus areas.


This workshop is for WA State Sport Associations (SSAs). SSAs are recommended to identify their most appropriate staff member(s) and/or volunteer(s) to attend this interactive workshop
