Nominations for WA’s premier sports awards, are now open! 

Nominations for Western Australia’s premier sports awards, the WA Sport Awards, are now open!


We have a range of award categories that recognise excellence in sport and celebrate the achievements across all levels of the WA Sports Industry.


Categories include: WA Sports Star, rebel Junior Sports Star, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, ActiveXchange Official of the Year, Service to Sport – May Campbell Medal, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Sports Administrator of the Year, revolutioniseSPORT Community Club of the Year - John Gilmour Medal, Healthway Healthy Club of the Year, RSM Australia Community Sport Volunteer of the Year, Community Sporting Event of the Year, Sport Initiative of the Year and Organisation of the Year.


Winners will be announced at the WA Sport Awards, at HBF Stadium on Thursday 29 February, 2024. SportWest would like to acknowledge the support of Venue Partner, VenuesWest


Nominations close on Monday 20 November, at 5pm and can be made via the SportWest website

True Sport | Child Safegaurding Forum 

Following Children's Week, SportWest, yesterday hosted our True Sport Child Safeguarding Forum at Royal Perth Golf Club. This forum provided the opportunity for WA State Sport Associations to hear about the latest information and requirements around child safety in sport and meet members of the SportWest Child Safeguarding in Sport Advisory Group.


Over 120 representatives from the sporting industry, government agencies and partners attended the Forum which also previewed the True Sport Child Safeguarding resources which have been developed to support State Sport Associations navigate, understand and start implementing the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.


It was a privilege to host Sport Integrity Australia's Director of Safeguarding, Lisa Purves who provided an insightful presentation on the importance of understanding risk in a child-related setting.


We would like to thank all of our presenters. Thank you to Rob Kennedy, Rachel Burrows, Olivia Birkett, Alexa Wilkins, Tom Fleming, Ava Oprandi, Karly Gavranich, Kait McNamara and Ben Procopis. Your knowledge and experience provided invaluable insights.


SportWest would like to thank the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for their commitment and support of the True Sport Initiative. Thank you to Director General, Lanie Chopping, for joining us on the morning and for your insightful opening address.


The newly developed True Sport Child Safeguarding resources will be circulated in early November and will be available via the SportWest website.

Appointment of DLGSC Executive Director

SportWest would like to acknowledge and congratulate Marcelyn Nicolaou, on her recent appointment as Executive Director, Sport and Recreation at the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural industries. 


Marcelyn has extensive experience in public sector administration at an executive level. She has more than 25 years’ experience working in all aspects of public service and has spent the past five years managing grant administration among other responsibilities. Marcelyn is heavily involved in community sport as a player, coach and club official.


SportWest would also like to sincerely thank Acting-Executive Director, Matt Hayes, for his hard work and commitment to the WA Sports Industry, your guidance has been invaluable. Matt is set to take up the position of DLGSC Director Strategy and Investment.

WA State Football Centre renamed to inspire the next generation

Western Australia’s $50.8 million state football centre has officially been renamed the Sam Kerr Football Centre. The State Government made the announcement in front of more than 4,000 ecstatic football fans at a community festival attended by Kerr and her CommBank Matildas teammates last Friday 27 October.

 
The new name honours Kerr’s success in the football world, her contribution to professional and grassroots football, and the legacy she continues to leave in inspiring the next generation of footballers.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Workshop

Register for our upcoming True Sport Mental Health and Wellbeing Workshop at SportHQ, Floreat on Wednesday, 8 November.This workshop will help SSA staff to embed True Sport – Mental Health and Wellbeing resources within their sporting context.
