Media Release | Au revoir to West Aussie Athletes Heading to Paris Games

More than 40 Western Australian athletes will take to the world stage to do their state and country proud at the 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games, with support from the WA Government.

With just weeks to go until the Olympic Games kick off in Paris on Friday, 26 July 2024, Premier Roger Cook and Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman this week farewelled some of the Western Australian athletes headed to Paris – including six hockey stars selected this week.

Earlier this year, the WA Government announced a $5,000 grant for every Western Australian athlete selected to compete on the world stage in Paris.

The direct financial support is part of a $1.3 million investment towards the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which also includes $750,000 to the Australian Olympic and Paralympic Team Appeal, and $333,000 for the Western Australian Institute of Sport for athlete qualification and performance optimisation initiatives.

The WA Government this week confirmed Western Australians will have the chance to come together and cheer on their favourite athletes, with Yagan Square broadcasting the Games from 7am to midnight on the big screen and digital towers each day of the Olympics and Paralympics.

Have Your Say - Should Amateur Sport Have Charitable Status?

The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) is working with the Federal Government to bring new funding opportunities for amateur sport.

The ASF has identified a potential solution that could provide much-needed resources to support grassroots initiatives, improve facilities, and run development programs across the nation. By amending the Charities Act 2013 (Cth), and achieving charitable status for amateur sport and athletes, sport could unlock over $103 million in philanthropic funding a year for the sector by 2030.

All WA-based NSO and SSA CEOs are invited attend the ASF virtual briefing on Tuesday, 9 July at 3pm AWST (5pm AEST).

Working with Children Day | 1 July 2024

July 1, 2024 marked the inaugural Working with Children Day, highlighting the importance of keeping our children and young people safe, both on and off the field.

Through the True Sport Child Safeguarding Initiative, we aim to assist State Sport Associations (SSAs) to understand, navigate and then start to action the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, including National Principle 5, relating to the use of the Working with Children Check.

To ensure we can continue to support the WA Sporting Community, SportWest, in collaboration with the Department of Communities are set to host a Webinar in early August to help educate and raise awareness to National Principle 5.
