Play Well enters its next chapter to turn shared ambition into more Australians playing sport
|
|
Play Well – Australia’s Sport Participation Strategy (Play Well Strategy) was developed in 2023 as the result of a collective effort of passionate people from across Australia, to create great sporting environments and experiences, where individuals of all ages, backgrounds, genders and abilities can come together to access the benefits of sport.
Over the past few years, Play Well has united the Australian sport system around a shared vision: that everyone has a place in sport. Together, we have strengthened connections, aligned priorities and built the foundations for change.
Play Well is moving from alignment to action, with Horizon 2 setting a clearer national focus on helping more Australians find, join and stay involved in sport.
Building on two years of national collaboration, Horizon 2 gives the sport sector a practical roadmap to remove barriers, create better experiences and make sport more welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable in every community.
Running from 2026-27 to 2028-29, Horizon 2 is grounded in evidence and shaped by the people who deliver sport every day. It draws on an independent evaluation of Horizon 1 by the University of Sydney and Deakin University, alongside insights from a national co-design process involving more than 500 stakeholders.
The choices we make through Play Well will shape Australia’s sporting landscape leading into Brisbane 2032 and beyond. |

WA Sport Development Pathways Strategy
|
|
The WA Government is investing $4.5 million over 3 years to strengthen sport development pathways across Western Australia.
The WA Sport Development Pathways Strategy provides the first statewide framework to better connect community participation, talent development and high-performance sport.
Strong development pathways are critical to maintaining Western Australia’s proud sporting record and ensuring future generations can participate, compete and excel on the national and international stage.
The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS) invites state sporting associations (SSAs) to apply for the 2026-2028 WA Sport Development Pathways Grant Program.
This program is a key initiative of the WA Sport Development Pathways Strategy and supports
SSAs to develop their capacity and capabilities to enhance their development pathways, and the environments created for athletes, coaches and officials to have greater experiences.

National Drowning Report Reinforces Importance of Water Safety Education
|
|
The release of the National Drowning Report 2026 highlights the vital role that ongoing water safety education, skills development and community awareness play in keeping Australians safe around water.
While the report recorded 313 drowning deaths over the past 12 months, it also provides valuable insights that help organisations, governments and communities better target prevention efforts. The findings identify key at-risk groups and locations, creating opportunities to strengthen water safety programs and encourage safer behaviours around beaches, rivers, pools and coastal environments.
As Western Australians prepare for another busy summer, the report serves as a timely reminder that everyone can play a role in preventing drowning. Through continued education, participation in swimming and lifesaving programs, and increased awareness of water safety risks, we can work together to reduce preventable incidents and help more people enjoy our waterways safely. |
