The 2026–27 WA State Budget delivers several positive investments that reinforce the important role sport and recreation plays in building healthier, more connected and resilient communities across Western Australia.
While there remains significant opportunity to further strengthen investment in community sport and active recreation over the coming years, this year’s Budget includes a number of initiatives that will positively support participation, wellbeing, regional communities and grassroots sport across the State.
SportWest welcomes the continued recognition of initiatives that help reduce barriers to participation, support families through cost-of-living pressures and strengthen community wellbeing.
Community sport remains one of Western Australia’s most powerful social and preventative health assets - helping people stay active, connected and engaged while delivering important physical, mental and social benefits to communities across the State.

Women of Sport | Inspiring Women Series with Peta Slocombe
|

Strong leadership in sport is not just about vision or performance, it’s about people.
In this practical and engaging session, Peta Slocombe will explore how to motivate others, work with individual strengths, and handle tough conversations with clarity and confidence. Drawing on her
experience across elite sport, governance and organisational psychology, Peta will share real‑world insights into what works when leading in pressured environments.
This session is designed for women working in sport who want practical tools they can use straight away.
Participants will gain a clearer understanding of how to lead conversations, build trust, and deal with challenges in a way that supports people and performance.

Local Sporting Stars | Congratulations Georgia and Steve
|
|
We’re proud to recognise Steve Cook and Georgia Butler as the latest recipients of the WA Local Sporting Stars Volunteer Recognition Program.
Steve has been a driving force behind Karratha Hockey for more than 15 years, contributing across every level of the club, from delivering school programs and coaching to securing funding and leading as President. His inclusive, positive approach has helped create a welcoming environment for players of all ages and abilities.
Georgia has been honoured for her incredible impact at Kelmscott Baseball Club, where she coaches T-Ball, supports the growing junior program and now leads as Junior Coordinator. Balancing volunteering with study, work and personal challenges, Georgia’s resilience and passion continue to inspire the next generation of players.
Supported by the WA Government and delivered in partnership with SportWest, Seven West Media and Spudshed, the Local Sporting Stars program celebrates the volunteers who keep community sport strong across Western Australia.

You're Invited to Play a Direct Role in Shaping the Future of Sport in Western Australia
|

Over the coming months, SportWest will be developing a clear and unified industry advocacy agenda in the lead-up to the 2028 Federal Election, and the 2029 State Election. This is a critical opportunity for us, as a sector, to align our voice and ensure government understands the true value, impact and needs of sport in Western Australia.
But this can’t be done in isolation. It needs to be informed by the lived experience, challenges and opportunities across the entire industry. It needs to be informed by you.
We have developed a short survey (5-8 minutes) to capture your views on:
- The most important issues facing sport right now
- The key priorities we should be advocating for with both Federal and State Government
- Where investment in sport will have the greatest impact
- Who across the industry wants to help shape this work more closely
Importantly, this is only the start of the process, and we will also be forming a small Industry Advocacy Working Group to help guide this work, and we encourage those interested to nominate through the survey.
This is about more than a list of Government asks. It’s about positioning sport as an essential part of the solution to meeting Government priorities across health, community, education and the economy.

International Volunteer Day Grants Program now open

Community groups, not-for-profit organisations and local governments can apply for grant funding to support local events and activities to help celebrate Western Australia's volunteers as part of International Volunteer Day.
Grants of up to $1,000 are available to support local events that celebrate and strengthen volunteering across Western Australian communities.
Funding is available for a wide range of activities, such as awards, ceremonies, workshops, seminars, and initiatives that promote inclusion and accessibility in volunteering. |

This Saturday night the Western Force will host the Queensland Reds from 5:35pm in the Club’s zero2hero Charity Game.
The Super Rugby finals race is heating up with both sides desperate for the points, with the Force having a run of three home games to finish.
For every ticket sold for Saturday’s game, $1 will go to zero2hero while all 23 match worn jerseys will be auctioned off to raise funds for zero2hero, who are a WA-based youth mental health charity. |

Join us for an engaging and interactive training workshop designed to support sport leaders in responding safely and respectfully to disclosures of Family and Domestic Violence.
Delivered in partnership with Starick, this session is ideal for sport leaders, administrators, coaches and volunteers who are committed to creating clubs where everyone feels safe, welcomed and respected.

- Build confidence to safely respond to Family and Domestic Violence disclosures.
- Learn how to provide respectful and appropriate support.
- Understand procedures and available resources to support your club.
