Get Involved with Best on Road – Building Safer, More Active Communities

SportWest’s Best on Road program is helping make Western Australia’s roads safer by harnessing the power of sport and community. Whether you're part of a sporting organisation, a local club, or simply passionate about road safety, there are meaningful ways to get involved.

Why get involved?
Best on Road is more than a road safety initiative – it’s a movement that celebrates positive behaviour, encourages safer travel, and promotes community wellbeing. By participating, your organisation can:

  • Champion road safety within your community
  • Recognise and reward individuals who demonstrate safe and respectful behaviour on the road
  • Collaborate with like-minded organisations to amplify impact
  • Access funding and support to run local campaigns or events
Ways to participate:
  • Nominate a Best on Road Award recipient – shine a light on someone who’s making a difference
  • Deliver a Best on Road initiative – bring the message to life at your club or event
  • Share the message – use your platforms to promote safer road habits
Whether you're based in Perth or a regional community, there’s a place for you in Best on Road. Together, we can create a culture of care and respect on and off the road.

Social Media Age Restrictions | 10 December

From 10 December 2025, certain social media platforms won’t be allowed to let Australian children under 16 create or keep an account, giving them more time to develop important skills and maturity.

The eSafety hub is your go-to resource for preparing your school community, from understanding how the age restrictions affect schools to accessing tools that help you communicate these changes to students and parents.

Nature Play WA | Creating Inclusive Spaces of Girls Snapshot Data

Nature Play WA has released the results from Snapshot Week. The observations collected have provided invaluable insights into how young people—particularly teen girls—are using public recreational spaces.

The data highlights a concerning trend: teen girls remain significantly underrepresented across most recreation environments.

Key Findings Include:

  • Lowest percentages of teen girls were recorded in:
    BMX (1%), basketball courts (1%), mixed-use areas (3%), nature play spaces (3%), playgrounds (4%), skateboarding areas (5%), fields/ovals (5%), roller skating areas (8%) and parkour/obstacle spaces (9%).
(Note: Not all teen girls present were actively participating in the activity.)

  • Recreation spaces with the highest representation of teen girls:
    Jetties, grass/open areas and seating.

  • Overall usage:
Teenagers accounted for 17% of all recreation-space users, with teen girls representing just 6%.

These findings reflect international research showing similar patterns, with teen girls most commonly observed walking, sitting and chatting, or swinging—rather than actively engaging in structured or high-energy recreational activities.

Nature Play WA is now progressing to the project’s next phase: consulting with girls and young people to understand what they want in recreational spaces.

Young people, or those who work with youth, are invited to participate. Anyone interested can contact Jane at jane@natureplaywa.org.au.

Evaluating the Impact of True Sport – UWA Evaluation Now Open

Since its launch in 2023, True Sport has become a cornerstone of positive change in Western Australia’s sporting landscape. Through its first three initiatives—Mental Health & Wellbeing, Sideline Behaviour, and Child Safeguarding—True Sport has supported clubs, volunteers, and organisations in creating sporting environments that promote wellbeing, respect, and safety.

Now, as we look toward the future, we’re inviting the sporting community to take part in an independent evaluation of the program, led by expert health promotion researchers at The University of Western Australia (UWA).

What we’re asking from you:

We’re encouraging all stakeholders to complete the survey and share their experiences with the True Sport program. Whether you’ve engaged with one initiative or all three, your feedback will help shape the next phase of True Sport.

The survey focuses on:

  • True Sport Mental Health & Wellbeing – supporting mental health literacy and awareness in sport

  • True Sport Sideline Behaviour – promoting respectful conduct and positive role modelling

  • True Sport Child Safeguarding – strengthening child safety practices across clubs and organisations

This evaluation is made possible thanks to the ongoing support of the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, whose partnership has helped True Sport reach communities across WA.

We’re proud of how far True Sport has come, but we know there’s more to do. Your voice will help us continue building a sporting culture that’s safe, supportive, and inclusive for all.
