SportWest Marches for Change. Standing Against Family and Domestic Violence

25 November 2025 marked the beginning of this year’s 16 Days in WA, a campaign urging all Western Australians to take action to end violence against women and family and domestic violence. Led by the Department of Communities and inspired by the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, this initiative raises awareness, drives positive change, and shines a light on those working to create safer communities.

As part of this commitment, the SportWest team proudly joined the 35th March Against Domestic and Family Violence, standing in solidarity with survivors, advocates, and community leaders. Our presence at the march reflects SportWest’s unwavering stance: violence has no place in sport or society.

During the march, we were honoured to walk alongside Sharon Wood Kenney, SportWest’s Cultural Navigation Lead, whose leadership and advocacy continue to inspire meaningful change across sporting communities.

Through the True Sport Respectful Relationships Initiative, supported by the Department of Creative Industries Tourism and Sport and delivered in partnership with Starick, SportWest champions respect, inclusion, and safety. Values that extend beyond the playing field into everyday life. SportWest is committed to supporting initiatives that promote Respectful Relationships, and we encourage all sporting organisations to join us in this important work.

Evaluating the Impact of True Sport – UWA Evaluation Now Open

Since its launch in 2023, True Sport has become a cornerstone of positive change in Western Australia’s sporting landscape. Through its first three initiatives—Mental Health & Wellbeing, Sideline Behaviour, and Child Safeguarding—True Sport has supported clubs, volunteers, and organisations in creating sporting environments that promote wellbeing, respect, and safety.

Now, as we look toward the future, we’re inviting the sporting community to take part in an independent evaluation of the program, led by expert health promotion researchers at The University of Western Australia (UWA).

What we’re asking from you:

We’re encouraging all stakeholders to complete the survey and share their experiences with the True Sport program. Whether you’ve engaged with one initiative or all three, your feedback will help shape the next phase of True Sport.

The survey focuses on:

  • True Sport Mental Health & Wellbeing – supporting mental health literacy and awareness in sport

  • True Sport Sideline Behaviour – promoting respectful conduct and positive role modelling

  • True Sport Child Safeguarding – strengthening child safety practices across clubs and organisations

This evaluation is made possible thanks to the ongoing support of the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, whose partnership has helped True Sport reach communities across WA.

We’re proud of how far True Sport has come, but we know there’s more to do. Your voice will help us continue building a sporting culture that’s safe, supportive, and inclusive for all.
