Transgender Participation in Sport Forum |
|
SportWest invites you to join us at this forum addressing the complex issue of inclusion policies for trans athletes, particularly transwomen, in female sports. The key concern is balancing fairness, safety, and integrity in competitions where physical attributes like strength, speed, and power are crucial.
Using an evidence-based approach, the session will explore the biological and sports science factors that impact competition, highlighting retained advantages of male-born athletes post-transition. It will examine how current policies may compromise fairness and safety for female athletes at both elite and grassroots levels.
Possible solutions, such as an Open or Third category, will be discussed. The seminar aims to equip sports leaders with scientific knowledge and practical tools to engage in informed, respectful discussions and create fair policies. Attendees will gain clarity on this pressing issue and contribute to shaping inclusive yet equitable solutions in women's sports.
Presenters: Professor Helen E Parker AM; PhD, MEd, BEd(Hons), FACHPER. Former Professor and Head of School of Health Sciences (Ret.), University of Notre Dame Professor Beth Hands; PhD, MEd, Postgrad DipEdStudies, BSocWk, BEd. Resource Spotlight | National Principle 2 |
|
Today, we take a closer look at National Principle 2 of the 10 National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. National Principle 2 highlights the importance of children and young people being informed about their rights, participating in decisions affecting them and ensuring they are taken seriously.
Some ways sporting organisations can start working towards implementing National Principle 2 could be to seek the views of children and young people through discussions, activities and surveys. Consider seeking their feedback on how their sporting experience could be better; what they like/ don’t like and what makes them feel safe/unsafe when participating in the sport.
Thanks to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, take a deep dive into National Principle 2 resource on how to start embedding this National Principle or contact our True Sport team for more information truesport@sportwest.com.au.
Together, let's work towards ensuring the safety and well-being of every child involved in sport in WA!
