|
SportWest as the peak body for sport in WA aims to guide and support our members on delivering quality experiences in sport, now and into the future. One of these crucial foundations to safe, welcoming and inclusive sport is creating culturally aware and appropriate environments for all Western Australians, with a particular focus on our First Nations people.
As the first step in SportWest embarking on our cultural journey of learning and growth, Thursday 5 September 2024 was a milestone date, with the announcement of our inaugural Cultural Navigation Lead in Sharon Wood-Kenney.
Sharon comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience in supporting WA communities to navigate cultural understanding, and SportWest will benefit greatly from her steady and experienced hands guiding us forwards.
We are also proud to launch the Cultural Navigation Advisory Group, click here to read the expression of interest information. Building Gender Equality in Sport| Panel & Networking Event |
|
On Tuesday night we had the pleasure of hosting a meaningful discussion on Building Gender Equality in Sport at the Gold Netball Centre. The event featured insightful contributions from our panellists Niamh O’Connor, Chris Sutherland, and Dr. Johan Nel.
During the discussion, it became clear that there is a critical need to create workplaces that are not only inclusive but also safe and welcoming for all. The panel emphasised that sports environments should actively prioritise family-friendly policies, ensuring that the needs of families are central to the culture.
Additionally, the conversation challenged organisations to rethink their recruitment strategies by considering candidates' 'potential' in addition to their existing experience and qualifications, broadening the scope for identifying and nurturing female talent.
We were fortunate to have the support of several male allies who joined us for the evening, demonstrating their commitment to advancing gender equality in sport and reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in driving meaningful change.
The second masterclass of the Emerging Leaders Program was held earlier in the day and facilitated by Carol Fox. It was a day of learning, growth, and empowerment for our future women leaders in sport.
Thank you to the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) for their continued support of the Women of Sport Program.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making these events successful.
The next Women of Sport event is an interactive and practical workshop, How To Be An Effective Director & Contribute To Board Performance facilitated by governance expert Suzanne Ardagh AM on Tuesday 8 October, 2024. Click the link below to register. |

Justin Langer Advocates for Behavioural Change | True Sport Sideline Behaviour Initiative |
|
Justin Langer’s feature article in The West Australian on Saturday, 31 August 2024 spoke to the need for WA sporting communities to advocate for behavioural change. The call out for change at all levels of sport shines through as the key message, following some reported incidents of poor sideline behaviour at community sporting matches in recent weeks.
Exert from The West Australian on Saturday, 31 August 2024
Justin Langer: How disgraceful acts from the sidelines are ruining sport now and in the future.
“Parents, guardians and grandparents are as important in being good role models and setting an example for their kids in community sport as anyone. By setting the example for how to treat fellow players, coaches and umpires respectfully, we are likely to see kids following in their parents’ behaviours.
Community sport is about fun and enjoyment. Parents have an important role in encouraging and modelling respectable behaviours. Win, lose, or draw, being positive with your kids and encouraging them will not only keep them in the game longer but will usually help them play better as well.
SportWest’s True Sport Sideline Behaviour Initiative seeks to increase public awareness of the impact of poor sideline behaviour in sporting environments here in WA.
It is encouraging to see organisations like SportWest providing tangible resources to assist sports in building and maintaining a culture of respect and enjoyment."
SportWest thanks Justin for his continued advocacy of a stronger, safer sports industry for all players, parents and volunteers and overall support of the True Sport Sideline Behaviour Initiative – to read more exerts from the article, click the link below.
